Association football, commonly called simply football or soccer, is an irregular ball-and-stick game played between two teams of eleven players each. It is played professionally by about 250 million players in more than 200 nations and dependencies, making it the most popular sport in the world. The game of football can be both played on a court, which is similar to a tennis court, or on the turf, which is similar to that of a soccer field. Most players are standing or sitting, but some stand with their legs apart, usually kicking the ball back and forth. The goal of the game is simple: score more points than the other team.
Unlike tennis or baseball, which have teams with three or more players per team, football relies upon a single ball for regulation. The field is divided by marked lines, usually blue for grass and white for turf. The ball is usually either played with or without a net, and the goal is scored when it enters the opponent’s goal box. The object of the game is to “kick the ball” (pardon the pun) into the other team’s goal. That is why many people consider soccer and football to be the same game.
Because the ball travels so far, there is plenty of opportunity for exciting, high-powered attacks from both sides. Each team scores differently depending upon which side has the ball closest to the goal line. The center of the field, known as the “yard line,” is generally considered the goal line, but sometimes that line is misjudged and deemed to be a goal line in a football game. Soccer rules also vary according to what type of football rules you want to play. Many schools and colleges use a variation of college football rules, so if you are interested in playing at a particular level, you need to learn the rules of that sport as well.
Foosball, or football with a ball, first developed in the United Kingdom in the late nineteenth century. The first known game of football was an outdoor game called “poker.” The origin of the name “foosball” is unknown, but it probably comes from a combination of two words, “ball” and “FOOS,” which is slang for football.
As football became a more popular sport, it spread to America and Europe. Many European nations have soccer competitions, while many American colleges and universities have football programs. The two games share many similarities, such as the wearing of helmets (to prevent injury), the playing on artificial pitches and the goal line is the same shape. The biggest difference between soccer and football is that the American version does not use the “foot-ball” style of football used in Europe.
A fun part of any football event is watching the players jump and dive for the ball. It has been estimated that there are more than two million jumping actions per hour in the NFL, as well as numerous soccer matches held internationally. Of course, the real action takes place outdoors at sports events. Professional and college game would be played on natural grass fields, while the indoor version is played indoors using turf materials. There are literally hundreds of different types of football clubs and leagues for people to choose from. You can join any team that you like, whether it’s a local team where you live, or a team from another country that you’ve never even set foot on.
