The Game of Foot Ball
Association football, also known as just football or soccer, is an organized sport played between two evenly matched teams of eleven players each. It is played professionally by about 250 million people in more than 200 countries and dependencies worldwide, making it the most popular sport in the world. It is considered one of the most common sports in the world, and in the United States has the second most attendance of any professional sport next to basketball. In addition to being the most widely played contact sport in the world, football also has a wide variety of other related sports such as ice hockey, American football, Australian football, rugby, and table tennis.
The sport of foot ball was developed in the 19th century by Belgian physician and sportswoman Marie Curie. She first developed a game that involved throwing a circular disc (a “serrated disc”) from one hand to another while standing on her toes. This game was called “ortoferoic”. The disc was not only used to throw, but it was also used to kick off the ground and propel the player. This sport was originally played using “sport shoes” with metal spikes on the bottom.
The use of spikes was banned in 1887 because it might cause a person to slip and thus could cause injury. With the ban on the use of metal spiked footwear, the popularity of the game literally skyrocketed and it is now the most played recreational sport in the world. Unlike baseball, which requires a pitcher and catcher and several other positions, foot ball relies on a much smaller field to play. There are only eleven players on each team, so there are no position battles.
The game of foot ball is a very fast-paced, energetic and fun game that is also relatively easy for people of all ages to play. The game of foot ball can be played indoor or outdoor; however, indoor games tend to be more refined and take place on smaller fields with smaller goals. Indoor games require proper conditioning to keep players alert, flexible and energized.
In a normal game of foot ball, players stand seven feet apart. Each team has nine players on each side of the field. The goal is to make the ball into the basket or goal using a foot ball service, kick or pass. Kickers are sometimes used by teams to force the other team to kick the ball out from the goal line. Passing the ball is done by either holding the ball with one hand or passing it between two hands.
Foot ball has a long history in England and in soccer in general. Many of the English players who have become world and European soccer legends started out playing foot ball. Another early game that became popular was “foot ball court”. These courts were usually circular and made of hardwood, which gave the players a tough time trying to hit the ball. Today there are basketball courts available, but they are not quite as easy to play with.
